TV customs duty in Nepal — which size is free, and what the rest costs

32, 43, 55, 65, 75 inch — which TV comes in duty-free (labour permit + 12 months = up to 65 inch, once), and when it does not, what customs 20 % + excise 10 % + VAT 13 % (about 49 % of the value) comes to. With a size-by-size sheet.

What you paid, or the Nepal shop price. Customs values the set on its own list — a low receipt does not lower it.

An estimate from the Gazette notice and the tariff. The customs officer's valuation applies, and the Director General decides any doubt, finally.

There is no per-inch duty rate. The inch decides one thing only — whether the set is FREE: a labour-permit worker back after 12 continuous months may bring one TV up to 65 inch without duty, once in a lifetime (Gazette notice of 29 May 2026, §1(1)(cha)). A set that is not free is taxed on its VALUE.

That value is taxed three times over, each on top of the last: customs 20%, excise 10%, VAT 13% — about 49.2% in all. A worker abroad over 6 months first takes the goods allowance off the value (NPR 15,000 for 6–12 months, 25,000 over a year); a visitor does not.

The officer values the set from the Department's reference list, not your receipt — the old "Rs 26,365 for 43 inch" tables were exactly this stack on an older reference price. Put the Nepal shop price of a similar set in the box for a realistic figure.

What you can do next
  • Declare the TV at the red channel and keep the customs slip: the free TV is recorded against your name, so a second one later pays.
  • Carry the labour permit and the passport stamps — the 12 continuous months are counted from them.
  • Bringing more than a TV? The झिटीगुन्टा tool adds the phone, gold and the rest in one estimate.

Questions people ask

How much duty per inch?

None — there is no per-inch rate. The inch only decides whether the TV is free (up to 65 inch for a 12-month labour-permit worker). Otherwise duty is on the value: customs 20 % + excise 10 % + VAT 13 %, about 49 % of what customs values the set at.

Can I bring a 32-inch TV free?

Yes, if you went on a labour permit and worked 12 continuous months — any size up to 65 inch, one set, once in a lifetime. Without those, a 32-inch set pays duty like any other.

And a 55 or 65 inch?

Same rule, 65 included. A 70 or 75 inch gets no allowance at all — duty on the whole set, not only the inches above 65.

I was told SSF members can bring any size.

That was the 2082 notice (from 29 May 2025). The 2083 notice of 29 May 2026 repealed it: the condition is now labour permit + 12 continuous months, the limit 65 inch, and SSF registration is not asked for.

Is a 55-inch really about Rs 39,000?

At a value of Rs 80,000, yes: customs 16,000, excise 9,600, VAT 13,728. At the shop price of your actual set it scales with the value — and the officer uses the Department's reference price, not your receipt.

Second TV, or I used the allowance before?

One free TV in a lifetime, recorded at customs. A second set — on this trip or a later one — pays the full stack, less the goods allowance if you were abroad over 6 months.

Does a 6-month worker get anything on a TV?

Not the free TV (that needs 12 months), but the goods allowance: the first NPR 15,000 of value is free, duty on the rest. Over a year without a labour permit: NPR 25,000 free, the rest taxed.

Can the TV come by cargo?

Dutiable goods sent before or after you must reach the customs warehouse within 3 months of your arrival, and you clear them in person. The free-TV allowance is for the set you bring as a labour-permit worker; ask the office before shipping one.

Do you keep what I type?

No. The figures are used to work out the answer and are not stored, and never appear in the page address.

These are estimates. The figures depend entirely on the numbers you enter and on assumptions that are listed on every result. They are not financial advice, and a bank, employer or authority may use different rules. Check anything important with them before you decide.

We do not keep your figures. Salary, debt and savings you type here are used to work out the answer and are not stored, and never appear in the page address. The only thing remembered is your country and language choice (a small cookie), so the currency can be suggested next time — never a figure you typed. Anonymous counters record that a calculation happened, not what it was.
